To modern eyes, it looks almost alien.

There are no whales.

Eventually, researchers realized something extraordinary:

They were looking at parts of the same animal.

Was It Really the Ultimate Predator?

Some researchers have questioned whether its mouth was capable of crushing hard-shelled prey as effectively as earlier reconstructions suggested.

It may have relied heavily on softer-bodied animals or used different feeding strategies than the classic "Cambrian monster" image suggests.

And this is another lesson from the fossil record:

The more we learn, the more complicated the monster becomes.

Today, Anomalocaris looks almost impossible.

Its body plan is unfamiliar.

Its mouth is strange.

Its appendages look like something from an alien movie.

The familiar animals surrounding us represent only a tiny moment in the planet's enormous history.

Before sharks.

Before dinosaurs.

There is no guarantee that a successful body design will survive forever.

What remains is a collection of fossils that allow us to reconstruct a creature that once seemed almost impossible to understand.

A creature that looked alien.
